heroes-rebornNBC has used some of its Olympic ad time to reveal that they will be reviving the television series Heroes. NBC shortly released a press release, in which President Jennifer Salke had the following to say:

The enormous impact Heroes had on the television landscape when it first launched in 2006 was eye-opening. Shows with that kind of resonance don’t come around often and we thought it was time for another installment. We’re thrilled that visionary creator Tim Kring was as excited about jumping back into this show as we were and we look forward to all the new textures and layers Tim plans to add to his original concept. Until we get closer to air in 2015, the show will be appropriately shrouded in secrecy, but we won’t rule out the possibility of some of the show’s original cast members popping back in.

Heroes original four-season run (2006-2010) was famous for its downfall. It was the first show in a very long time, arguably ever, to be a legitimate drama with super-heroes, and certainly the first to do it on the show’s scale and with such clear influence from comic books. The first season was a runaway success both critically and commercially. However, the 2007-08 Writer’s Guild of America Strike caused the second season to be considerably shortened, derailing the show’s pace and cutting several arcs short. It was unable to recover in its disastrous third season, and after a convoluted and boring fourth season, the show was quietly cancelled.

The only details we know are that it’s labelled an “Event mini-series” and that thirteen episodes have been ordered. Look for updates as more become available in coming months.
